Who is Kitty Opishinski?
I grew up in Key Largo, Florida where I wrote for the school newspaper and had a short-lived radio show on a local station. I attended University of South Florida, where I wrote for a community newspaper and met my future husband. We eventually moved to Rhode Island, where I started my family and, later, graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in English. Sadly my mother, who saved one of my earliest books, written when I was five and titled Caow (Cow with a Southern accent), died before I was able to earn my degree. Although I have been writing all of my life, Follow Me: Hikes for Children to Lead is my first published book.
When my daughters were young, I worked in various jobs, the way many mothers do. I continued to write when possible, always dreaming of the day when I would publish my first book. Although I was a newspaper reporter and wrote as a freelancer for a while, I have many of my own stories I want to tell and am happy that now I’ve started to do that!
When I’m not writing, I enjoy doing so many different things that I can’t list them all. Here are a few just to give you an idea: traveling, puzzles, fishing, unicycling, board games, birding, making short films, and archery.
